OpenAI is reportedly building an X-like social network

Published Reach 58

OpenAI is reportedly testing an internal prototype for a social network built around ChatGPT's image generation tools. While CEO Sam Altman has quietly sought feedback from outsiders, it remains unclear if it will launch as a standalone app or inside ChatGPT. The move would unlock crucial real-time user data to help train future frontier models.

Back in February, when Elon Musk made an unsolicited $97.4 billion offer to buy OpenAI, Sam Altman fired back with a classic retort: no thank you, but we will buy Twitter for $9.74 billion if you want.

Most people laughed it off as billionaire banter. It turns out Altman might actually have been laying the groundwork.

OpenAI is quietly building an internal prototype for an X-like social network. While the project is still in its infancy and may never see the light of day, CEO Sam Altman has already been privately seeking feedback from outsiders.

Built around image generation

According to sources cited by The Verge, the prototype features a social feed designed specifically around ChatGPT's image generation tools.

That focus is hardly an accident. Last month, OpenAI released a major update to its image model that sparked a viral wave of Studio Ghibli-style creations. The hype was so massive that Altman noted over one million new users signed up for ChatGPT in a single hour.

ChatGPT was already a runaway train, crossing 400 million weekly active users in mid-February and ranking as the world's most downloaded app last month. But OpenAI has not decided whether this new social experiment should be a standalone app or folded directly into ChatGPT.

Everyone wants what Grok and X have

The real prize behind a social feed is not just keeping people scrolling. It is all about real-time training data.

As one rival AI lab researcher put it, everyone in the industry has been jealous of how Grok hooks into X, particularly the viral loop of users getting the bot to say something goofy and posting it back to the feed. Musk even merged X and xAI in an $80 billion deal, while Meta trains its Llama family on petabytes of Instagram and Facebook posts.

OpenAI, by comparison, relies heavily on scraped web corpora and conversational chat history. It lacks a proprietary firehose of breaking news and live cultural reactions. Feeding free ChatGPT users an ad-friendly feed could also open up a massive new revenue line.

Why it matters

We think this move shows OpenAI feeling the heat of the data wall.

High-quality public text on the open web is drying up fast. The real differentiator for frontier reasoning models is shifting toward fresh, human-generated sentiment and breaking events. Musk and Zuckerberg already sit on those digital public squares, leaving Altman with little choice but to test his own garden.

However, building a social network is notoriously brutal. Social platforms do not thrive on cool image filters alone; they live or die on graph network effects, brutal content moderation, and real community identity.

If OpenAI just builds an endless feed of synthetic pictures, it risks becoming an AI slop graveyard that users tire of in a week. Still, if even a fraction of ChatGPT's hundreds of millions of users start sharing prompts and creations publicly, OpenAI could instantly spin up a vibrant creative network without spending a dime on user acquisition.
