OpenAI signs $11.9B compute deal with CoreWeave

Published Reach 42

OpenAI just inked a massive five-year deal worth $11.9 billion with CoreWeave for AI data centers and infrastructure services. As part of the agreement, OpenAI will also receive around $350 million in equity tied to CoreWeave's upcoming IPO. The commitment secures vast GPU capacity for OpenAI while supercharging its partner's public debut.

Training and running frontier AI models takes an eye-watering amount of cash, and OpenAI just showed everyone its latest receipt.

According to a report from CNBC, citing people familiar with the matter, specialized cloud provider CoreWeave has signed a massive five-year contract with OpenAI valued at $11.9 billion. Reuters first reported on the agreement.

As part of the massive infrastructure deal, OpenAI will also receive an equity stake in CoreWeave worth roughly $350 million tied to the company's upcoming initial public offering.

The Nvidia-backed cloud giant

CoreWeave, which has heavy backing from AI chip kingpin Nvidia, is preparing to make its public market debut on the Nasdaq in the coming weeks.

In its IPO prospectus filed last week, the company revealed that its 2024 revenue surged more than 700% to $1.92 billion. More than 60% of that total came from Microsoft, OpenAI's primary backer.

To feed the ongoing computing frenzy, CoreWeave has raised over $12 billion in equity and debt over the last two years. That includes a $1.1 billion round in May at a $19 billion valuation, alongside a $650 million credit facility announced in October. Reuters reported in November that the company is seeking an IPO valuation topping $35 billion.

Infrastructure deployment is moving even faster than planned. CoreWeave wrapped up 2024 with 32 operational data centers housing more than 250,000 Nvidia GPUs. That beat its internal target of 28 facilities, with another 10 centers scheduled to come online in 2025. Outside of Microsoft and OpenAI, its roster includes Meta, IBM, and Cohere.

Why it matters

OpenAI committing nearly $12 billion over five years sends an unmistakable signal: the race for raw AI compute is nowhere near a plateau. For end users and enterprise developers relying on OpenAI, securing quarter of a million Nvidia GPUs guarantees the capacity needed to serve larger reasoning models without falling off a latency cliff.

Strategically, this is a brilliant hedge by Sam Altman and company. Historically, OpenAI has been tied at the hip to Microsoft Azure. But Microsoft was already routing massive workloads to CoreWeave. By signing directly with CoreWeave and pocketing a $350 million pre-IPO stake, OpenAI secures direct access to tier-one GPU clusters, captures financial upside from its supplier's listing, and gently reduces single-cloud vulnerability.

That said, the circular dependencies across this ecosystem are hard to ignore. CoreWeave gets over 60% of its revenue from Microsoft, Microsoft backs OpenAI, and now OpenAI commits billions directly back to CoreWeave. If enterprise AI monetization fails to keep pace with these staggering infrastructure commitments, this tightly coupled loop will feel the squeeze fast.
