OpenAI's Codex can now see what you're doing on your Mac
OpenAI just launched Appshots for Codex on Mac, a new feature designed to capture application context across your desktop. It allows the AI to see what you are working on across different Mac apps, integrating Codex directly into your daily routine beyond just a code window.
OpenAI just gave its desktop coding assistant a lot more vision into what you are actually working on. Ari Weinstein announced that the company has rolled out Appshots for Codex on Mac.
Reading your desktop context
Basically, Appshots gives Codex the ability to capture app context directly from your Mac. Instead of forcing you to constantly copy and paste code, bug logs, or requirements between windows, the feature lets Codex understand what you are doing inside different applications.
Weinstein noted that the capability makes it remarkably easy to integrate Codex into virtually every daily workflow on his Mac.
Why it matters
We think this is a telling pivot: Codex is moving from a localized coding assistant inside an IDE to a system-wide copilot for your entire desktop.
For developers, context switching between tools is a notorious productivity killer. Letting an AI directly observe the state of your workspace cuts down that friction significantly.
That said, deep app context capture always raises privacy and security questions. Users will need clear visibility into what Codex sees before they feel comfortable letting it watch their day-to-day screens.
