OpenAI supercharges Codex with GPT-5

Published Reach 42

OpenAI just rolled out big updates to Codex, now powered by GPT-5. The release brings a new IDE extension, smooth task transitions between cloud and local setups, GitHub code reviews, and an overhauled CLI tool. It is available right away through ChatGPT plans.

OpenAI just dropped a significant upgrade to Codex, shifting it from a behind-the-scenes coding model into a full-fledged dev collaborator powered by GPT-5.

The update is available directly through existing ChatGPT subscription plans.

Covering every step of the dev workflow

The refresh touches almost every part of a developer's daily setup. OpenAI rolled out a brand-new IDE extension, an overhauled Codex CLI, and the ability to seamlessly pass tasks back and forth between the cloud and local environments.

On top of that, Codex is plugging directly into where teams collaborate most, now handling code reviews inside GitHub.

Why it matters

For developers, this removes the friction of copying snippets into a browser window. Having GPT-5 living natively in your terminal, IDE, and pull requests means fewer broken workflows, making it well worth testing if you already pay for ChatGPT.

Industry-wise, OpenAI is making it clear that it wants to own the developer tooling layer, putting pressure on standalone AI editors like Cursor and even GitHub Copilot.

We think bridging local and cloud environments is the smartest move here, solving a real daily headache. The big question mark is GitHub code reviews: if GPT-5 generates too much nitpicking noise on PRs, developers will tune it out fast, so real-world accuracy will make or break that feature.
