OpenAI taps FrontierMath to check its AI math homework
OpenAI just purchased access to Epoch AI’s FrontierMath verifiers to automatically check whether solutions generated by its models actually hold up. FrontierMath tests AI against extremely difficult mathematics problems, giving OpenAI automated, rigorous ground truth to evaluate advanced reasoning capabilities.

When AI tackles frontier-level math, the hardest part isn't always generating an answer—it's figuring out if the solution is actually valid or just a very convincing hallucination.
OpenAI has purchased access to Epoch AI's FrontierMath: Open Problems verifiers. The access allows the company to automatically verify whether solutions generated by its frontier models are mathematically sound.
FrontierMath is an exceptionally difficult benchmark created by Epoch AI specifically to push cutting-edge AI systems to their absolute limits.
Automated grading for frontier math
Grading novel, expert-level math problems has traditionally required human mathematicians spending hours reviewing complex proofs.
With these automated verifiers in hand, OpenAI can now validate model outputs against rigorous problems at scale, making its evaluation of advanced mathematical reasoning much more reliable.
Why it matters
For advanced reasoning models, accurate feedback is everything. If an evaluation pipeline can't programmatically verify whether a complex proof holds up, training and testing hit an immediate bottleneck.
We think OpenAI's move to buy external verifiers is smart and pragmatic: building bulletproof verification for frontier-level math from scratch is expensive and slow.
It also signals that frontier AI evaluation is growing up. The battleground is shifting away from standard multiple-choice tests toward strict, automated verification of genuine problem-solving capabilities.
