OpenAI buys NextSlide to upgrade ChatGPT presentations
OpenAI just acquired presentation startup NextSlide, bringing its team on board to build creation tools for ChatGPT. The startup's tool turns raw notes, documents, and prompts into polished, editable slide decks. The deal quietly closed earlier this year with undisclosed terms, marking another push by OpenAI to expand ChatGPT beyond text into visual communication.
OpenAI has acquired NextSlide, a stealthy presentation startup whose team is now officially working on ChatGPT.
While founder Ahmed Beshry just shared the news on LinkedIn, he noted the announcement came a few months late, as the deal actually closed earlier this year. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Turning notes into polished slides
NextSlide built a tool designed to take prompts, notes, documents, and research and instantly convert them into polished, editable presentations.
Beshry, who previously co-founded the checkout startup Caper AI before Instacart acquired it in 2021, said the mission remains the same: helping people express ideas visually and turn messy thoughts into meaningful, ready-to-share work inside ChatGPT.
Why it matters
Anyone who uses ChatGPT for work knows the biggest bottleneck isn't getting an outline, it's manually copy-pasting text into PowerPoint and fixing the layouts. Bringing native presentation generation into ChatGPT would eliminate that extra step entirely.
This move also puts OpenAI on a collision course with dedicated presentation tools like Gamma and Tome, not to mention Microsoft's own Copilot in PowerPoint. We think acquiring specialized talent is a smart shortcut for OpenAI to evolve ChatGPT from a plain text box into a versatile visual workspace, though the real test will be how smoothly the tech integrates without cluttering the chat experience.
