Running AI agents without constantly pinging cloud APIs or worrying about data privacy has always been the dream for local compute enthusiasts.

Nous Research just launched Hermes Desktop in public preview. It is the next major step for their Hermes Agent platform, packaging the entire agent experience into a native local application.

Native agents on your own iron

If the tool sounds familiar, that is because it first made a cameo during Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang's GTC keynote. Now, it is finally open for anyone to try.

The app runs natively on local hardware without depending on external cloud infrastructure. That means users can spin up and execute the full Hermes Agent framework directly on their own desktops.

Why it matters

We think this is a clear sign that open-source AI is shifting from merely hosting local weights to orchestrating autonomous agent workflows on consumer hardware.

For developers and privacy-focused power users, packaging agents into a native desktop shell removes the headache of managing tangled terminal environments. It also keeps your data strictly offline.

The trade-off, of course, is that performance hinges entirely on your local GPU. But if your machine has the specs to handle it, testing a fully self-contained local agent is well worth your afternoon.
