Notion takes on Granola with built-in AI meeting transcription
Notion just rolled out an AI meeting notetaker that listens via system audio to transcribe calls and generate structured summaries while you take notes alongside it. Currently live on Mac via the "/meet" command across dozens of languages, the update also brings enterprise search and an AI research mode.

Taking notes during a meeting usually means choosing between actually listening or furiously typing away. Over the last year, standalone AI meeting assistants like Granola, Otter, and Read AI became runaway hits by solving that exact headache.
Now, Notion wants all of that traffic back. On May 13, the company rolled out its own AI-powered meeting notetaking and transcription feature, letting users capture and summarize conversations directly inside their workspaces.
Type /meet to transcribe
The workflow will feel instantly familiar if you have used tools like Granola. On any Notion page, you simply type "/meet" to trigger the recording dialog.
Before capturing system audio, the tool prompts you to confirm that everyone in the room has consented to being recorded. Once you hit confirm consent, the transcription begins in real time.
While Notion's AI listens and transcribes in the background, you can still type your own notes right on the same page. When the call ends and you hit stop, the AI generates a structured summary combining its own transcript with your manual notes.
You can also pick specialized templates from a menu, including Auto, Sales Call, Standup, and Team Meeting. The feature currently supports more than a dozen languages, including English, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish. For now, it is limited to the Mac desktop app on version 4.7.0, with a mobile rollout planned later.
Expanding beyond basic docs
Meeting transcription is not arriving alone. Notion also introduced enterprise search, which lets teams search across Notion and third-party apps, alongside a new research mode that taps reasoning models to generate shareable reports.
Combined with existing Notion AI tools, teams can now query across their meeting transcripts and existing documentation, or drop meeting blocks directly into active project databases.
The broader strategy here is clear. After launching Notion Calendar last year and introducing an AI email client for Gmail last month, the company is systematically checking off every box needed to challenge Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace.
Why it matters
For regular Notion users, this eliminates one of the most frustrating parts of remote work: exporting transcripts from Otter or Granola and pasting them back into company docs. Having audio capture, live scratchpads, and team wikis live under one roof cuts serious workflow friction. If you already pay for Notion AI, this might instantly render your third-party transcription subscription redundant.
For the AI startup ecosystem, this is a textbook example of the platform squeeze. Standalone AI notetakers built great products, but they ultimately produce text that belongs in a collaborative workspace. When the platform builds that exact experience natively, hanging onto customers becomes an uphill battle.
We think Notion played this move brilliantly by focusing on workflow integration rather than just raw transcription accuracy. The big test, however, will be audio reliability. Third-party tools have spent years perfecting speaker identification and noise filtering. If Notion cannot match that fidelity, power users might still hesitate to ditch their dedicated apps.
