Netflix tests AI ads that blend into Stranger Things
Netflix just showcased a new AI ad format designed to blend sponsor products directly into backdrops inspired by its hit shows like Stranger Things. The interactive spots can appear during mid-roll breaks or pause screens, and are set to roll out to ad-tier subscribers by the end of the year.

Netflix is using AI to make commercial interruptions feel less like ad breaks. At its Upfront presentation on Wednesday, the streaming giant revealed a new ad format that lets brands generate product backgrounds styled directly after its biggest original shows.
Disguising commercials as show scenes
During the showcase, Netflix demonstrated an example that placed a product image over an environment inspired by Stranger Things. The company noted the same treatment could apply to hits like Wednesday or Bridgerton, either running as mid-roll breaks or appearing on-screen whenever a viewer hits pause. Netflix plans to roll them out with interactive overlays and calls to action by the end of this year.
The push comes alongside rapid growth for its ad-supported tier, which now counts 94 million monthly active users, up from 40 million at this time last year. Netflix advertising president Amy Reinhard teased that the pace of new ad tech rollouts is only going to accelerate.
Why it matters
For viewers on the ad-supported tier, this is a clear move to disguise commercials as native extensions of the shows they are watching. While a themed pause ad might look less jarring than a generic loud commercial, it also turns every moment of the viewing experience into targeted marketing real estate.
We think this is a clever way for Netflix to monetize the visual clout of its original IP without requiring expensive custom shoots. However, the risk lies in execution: if the AI-generated backgrounds look cheap or pair a gloomy show with an awkward consumer product, Netflix risks cheapening the prestige brands it spent billions to build.
