District 9 director drops 13-min AI film made with Seedance 2.0
Neill Blomkamp just debuted NIGHTBORNE, a 13-minute short film created with ByteDance's Seedance 2.0 video model, real concept artists, and the likenesses and voices of 32 real people. After two years of experimentation, the District 9 director says he's now aiming to tackle a full-length feature and has launched an AI banner, Barley Studios.

District 9 director Neill Blomkamp just took the leap from traditional sci-fi sets straight into generative video.
Blomkamp debuted NIGHTBORNE, a 13-minute AI-generated short film built using ByteDance's Seedance 2.0 video model. After tinkering with AI tools for roughly two years, Blomkamp calls the project his first full test film in the medium.
Human artists in the loop
Rather than relying purely on text prompts, Blomkamp leaned on a hybrid workflow.
Real concept artists handled the initial designs, and the short features the licensed faces and voices of 32 real people.
Alongside the film, Blomkamp announced the launch of Barley Studios, a dedicated AI production house that will mirror the experimental role Oats Studios played in his practical and VFX filmmaking. His next target is to shoot a full-length feature using the same pipeline.
Why it matters
We think Blomkamp's approach is one of the smartest blueprints Hollywood has seen for generative video so far. Instead of treating AI as a magic black box that replaces creative staff, he treated Seedance 2.0 as an ultra-flexible rendering pipeline layered on top of real artists and human likenesses.
That distinction keeps characters consistent and avoids the typical narrative drift seen in raw prompt-to-video clips.
With an established blockbuster filmmaker publicly committing to a full-length AI feature, the pressure shifts directly to competitors like OpenAI's Sora and Runway to prove their models can sustain long-form cinematic workflows.
