A mystery model dubbed "mona-lisa-1" quietly surfaced on LM Arena on August 9, kicking off another round of detective work across the AI community.

Tracing the SynthID clues

Observant testers were quick to dig into the outputs. Posts from Kol Tregaskes and AiBattle pointed out that images generated by the model carried SynthID watermarks, which immediately pointed fingers at OpenAI.

Early testers also reported that the model visibly outperforms the older Image 2 model in raw visual quality and coherence.

So far, OpenAI has kept quiet and hasn't officially claimed the model.

Why it matters

Dropping unannounced models onto public leaderboards to stress-test them under the radar has become OpenAI's favorite playbook.

If "mona-lisa-1" is indeed an OpenAI project, it suggests an upgrade to its flagship image generation pipeline is imminent, putting pressure back on rivals in the creative AI space.

That said, arena sightings don't always mean an immediate launch. Creators will have to wait for OpenAI to make it official before expecting it in ChatGPT.
