Elon Musk's next bet: an all-AI software company called Macrohard
Elon Musk just announced he is recruiting at xAI to build Macrohard, a "purely AI software company." While the name is a playful jab at Microsoft, Musk claims the project is dead serious—reasoning that because software companies make no physical hardware, AI should theoretically be able to simulate them entirely.
Elon Musk has a new target in his sights, and this time he is poking fun at Microsoft while pitching a radical AI concept.
Musk posted on X inviting engineers to join xAI and build a purely AI-run software company called Macrohard.
Simulating a tech giant with AI
Musk admitted that the name Macrohard is tongue-in-cheek, but insisted the project itself is very real.
His reasoning is straightforward: because software companies like Microsoft do not manufacture physical hardware, it should theoretically be possible to simulate an entire software enterprise using artificial intelligence alone.
The announcement serves as an open call for engineers to join xAI and work on turning that idea into reality.
Why it matters
Musk is pushing the idea of autonomous software engineering to its absolute extreme. If AI agents can handle everything from coding and testing to product architecture, the economics of building and running software could change drastically.
That said, running a real software company involves much more than code generation—it requires navigating customer relationships, business strategy, and human nuance. For now, it looks primarily like a clever recruiting hook for xAI, but it shows just how aggressively Musk wants to challenge legacy tech giants.
