MLB just teamed up with Google Cloud to launch Scout Insights, a new AI commentary feature inside its Gameday feed on the MLB App and website. Powered by Gemini models, it crunches hundreds of petabytes of league data to serve real-time historical tidbits at key moments. It essentially gives fans personalized booth-level analysis directly on their phones.

Watching a baseball play-by-play text feed can get dry pretty fast when all you see are balls, strikes, and outs.

On Wednesday, as the new season kicked off, Major League Baseball rolled out a new AI commentary feature called MLB Scout Insights. Built alongside Google Cloud and powered by Gemini models, the tool is now live inside the Gameday feed across the MLB App and MLB.com.

A pocket scout digging through petabytes of stats

Baseball runs on numbers, and Scout Insights connects directly to hundreds of petabytes of league data.

Gemini analyzes live game scenarios against historical records to drop bite-sized insights during key moments of each inning. In beta tests from last season, the system flagged that Jordan Walker hit an exit-velocity single of 114.3 mph, marking the 9th-hardest single at American Family Field since 2014.

It essentially puts a veteran scout right into the fan's palm, translating complex tracking data into digestible commentary in real time.

Why it matters

For fans following games at work or on the go, Gameday just got a lot more engaging. Instead of just seeing strike zones and spray charts, you get instant historical context that would usually take a broadcast booth minutes to research.

We think Google and MLB made a very smart call here. Rather than forcing a flashy AI avatar or gimmick onto fans, they applied Gemini where it truly shines: parsing massive data archives at lightning speed and serving up relevant, human-like nuggets right when the action happens. It sets a clear blueprint for how legacy sports leagues can modernize real-time fan engagement without overcomplicating the experience.
