Mistral's OCR 4 parses documents across 170 languages with bounding boxes

Published Reach 41

Mistral just released OCR 4, a document AI model that delivers bounding boxes, block classification, and inline confidence scores alongside raw text. It covers 170 languages, runs in a single container for self-hosted deployments, and cuts batch API costs to $2 per 1,000 pages.

Parsing complex enterprise PDFs with AI has always been a painful bottleneck of jumbled tables, lost headers, and hallucinated layouts. Mistral is tackling that messy preprocessing layer head-on.

The AI lab just launched Mistral OCR 4, an enterprise document AI model designed to deliver full structural intelligence alongside raw text. Instead of simply vomiting out markdown, OCR 4 returns localized bounding boxes, typed-block classifications for things like tables, formulas, and signatures, and inline confidence scores.

Structuring documents for agents

The model covers 170 languages across 10 language groups, showing notable resilience on low-resource and specialized scripts like Hindi, Georgian, Tamil, and Hebrew where older models tend to fall apart. In internal evaluations across multilingual datasets, it hit a 0.98 score, while scoring 85.20 on the OlmOCRBench leaderboard.

In blind head-to-head human evaluations across more than 600 realistic business documents, annotators picked OCR 4 over rival document AI tools 72% of the time. Early enterprise customers are reporting dramatic efficiency bumps. Financial QA platform Rogo noted it matched leading agentic parsers on chart-dense data with roughly 8x lower cost and 17x lower latency, while IP firm Anaqua clocked a 4x speedup per page.

Mistral packaged OCR 4 to run entirely inside a single container for self-hosted enterprise setups with strict data residency rules. Cloud API pricing starts at $4 per 1,000 pages, dropping to $2 via the Batch API, with an application-level Document AI tier in Mistral Studio running at $5 per 1,000 pages.

Why it matters

We think Mistral nailed the exact layer where modern enterprise RAG and agent workflows break down. Most engineering teams building enterprise search spend endless hours writing fragile parsing heuristics just to figure out where a table starts and ends. By shipping coordinates and confidence scores right out of the box, Mistral transforms raw document ingestion from an error-prone chore into citation-ready, verifiable data.

Offering single-container on-prem deployment at these price points is also a smart wedge against cloud giants. Highly regulated sectors like legal, insurance, and healthcare refuse to pipe sensitive filings to external endpoints. Giving them an ultra-fast, local parser that costs pennies per file makes deploying local agentic pipelines far more practical. Just remember Mistral's explicit caveat: OCR 4 parses structure, but it is not a decision-maker, and humans still need to verify critical workflows.
