Midjourney's new Draft Mode gives you 24 ideas for half the cost

Published Reach 39

Midjourney just launched Draft Mode for its V8.1 model, generating 24 lower-res images per job while using half the fast GPU hours of a standard run. Users can hit Vary on any draft to upscale it to full resolution. There is also a new --preview flag to test early, unpolished model iterations.

Drafting visual ideas with AI has always felt like a painful gamble. You spend expensive fast GPU hours waiting for a four-image grid, only to realize the composition is completely off from what you imagined.

Midjourney just introduced a much smarter way to brainstorm. The company rolled out a brand new Draft Mode for its V8.1 model, alongside a fresh experimental parameter that lets creators test early model builds.

24 ideas at half the cost

The headline feature here is Draft Mode, built specifically for rapid exploration.

Instead of the standard grid, each Draft Mode run generates 24 lower-resolution, lower-quality images all at once. It essentially gives you a full contact sheet of visual possibilities in a single shot.

Even though you get 24 images per prompt, Midjourney says a draft run consumes only half the fast hours required by a standard V8.1 SD job.

Once you spot an idea that works, you do not have to start from scratch. Clicking the Vary button on any draft image tells the system to re-render that specific frame at full quality and resolution.

Turning the feature on is simple: creators can toggle it using the lightning bolt icon located in the menubar.

A secret flag for cutting-edge tests

Alongside Draft Mode, Midjourney also quietly launched the `--preview` flag for users who want to peek under the hood of upcoming models.

Typing `--preview` at the end of a prompt sends the request to early, unpolished model iterations. Midjourney cautioned that these generations might look rough around the edges and are not guaranteed to perform consistently over time.

In this initial rollout, users will notice visual differences across the board, particularly on prompts leveraging personalization and moodboards.

The team is gathering feedback on these experimental results in the official Discord ideas-and-features channel.

Why it matters

For creators and concept artists, Draft Mode is an immediate workflow upgrade. Visual ideation has always been about casting a wide net before refining, and burning full GPU credits just to check framing was unnecessarily wasteful. Being able to scan 24 quick variants for half the standard cost completely shifts the economics of early-stage prompting.

From an infrastructure standpoint, this is a brilliant play by Midjourney. Decoupling rapid prototyping from high-fidelity rendering lets the company conserve valuable compute while giving users the illusion of getting dramatically more output. It eases server strain during peak hours without degrading perceived value.

Meanwhile, the `--preview` flag shows Midjourney doubling down on its Discord-native community ethos. Turning paying power users into an active testbed helps them iterate rapidly, though casual creators should probably avoid the flag if they need predictable, publication-ready results right now.
