Midjourney is stepping into hardware tomorrow

Published Reach 49

Midjourney just revealed it will unveil its first hardware project during a launch event in San Francisco on Wednesday at 6pm PT. The company plans to livestream the announcement, though details about what the device actually is remain completely under wraps. It marks an unexpected leap beyond software for the image-gen heavyweight.

Midjourney just revealed its very first hardware project, and it is not an AI pin, smart glasses, or an art tablet. It is a full-body ultrasound scanner designed to image your entire body in roughly 60 seconds without radiation or giant magnetic fields.

Announced at an in-person event in San Francisco on Wednesday, the device is the debut product of Midjourney Medical. The company is positioning it as a faster, cheaper alternative to traditional MRI machines.

A shallow pool and half a million sensors

The way it works sounds like something out of high-concept sci-fi. A person steps onto a platform and is lowered into a shallow pool of water ringed with 500,000 ultrasonic sensors.

Soundwaves fire through tissue from every angle, producing terabytes of raw data per second. A dedicated compute cluster then stitches those echoes into high-resolution 3D cross-sectional views of bone, muscle, fat, and organs. Midjourney calls this method Ultrasonic CT.

To pull off the silicon side, Midjourney inked a five-year co-development deal worth up to $74 million with Butterfly Network. The prototype packs 40 Ultrasound-on-Chip modules, with plans to transition to custom silicon by 2028.

Leading the charge is Ahmad Abbas, formerly a hardware engineering manager on Apple's Vision Pro team. Midjourney CEO David Holz, who previously co-founded Leap Motion, noted that this scanner is just one of four hardware initiatives underway at the lab.

Surprisingly, the first public deployment will not be a sterile hospital wing. Instead, scans will be offered as part of a 25,000-square-foot luxury wellness facility in San Francisco called Midjourney Spa, complete with saunas, cold plunges, and a gym, targeted to open by late 2027.

Why it matters

We think this is one of the most audacious hardware gambles coming out of the AI boom, mostly because it bypasses the traditional playbook entirely.

Instead of fighting Siemens, GE, and Philips inside heavily regulated hospital systems, Midjourney is turning body scanning into an upscale wellness amenity. The device currently lacks FDA clearance for clinical diagnostics, and Holz openly admitted they are not even using AI in it yet. By framing the initial scans as non-diagnostic body composition mapping, Midjourney can start collecting terabytes of real-world volumetric data from paying gym-goers without waiting years for regulatory green lights.

For everyday consumers, this could eventually turn MRI-level scans from a dreaded, expensive clinical chore into an affordable, routine habit. But scaling up to 50,000 physical scanning pods by 2031 while managing wet, bulky hardware installations is a massive operational leap for a team that has lived entirely inside Discord bots. If they pull it off, though, Midjourney might quietly reinvent preventive medicine from the inside of a bathhouse.
