Microsoft PowerToys is getting a one-click workspace organizer

Microsoft is working on a new Workspaces feature for its PowerToys suite on Windows. The tool lets users save multi-app layouts to a shortcut, automatically launching and snapping apps across displays with a single click. It is slated to debut in the PowerToys 0.84 update.

Every morning, millions of developers and multi-monitor users play the same tedious game: launch half a dozen apps, drag each window to its corner, and resize them one by one.

Microsoft wants to replace that whole routine with a single click. According to a YouTube demo spotted by Neowin, Microsoft product manager Connor Plante revealed an upcoming PowerToys feature called Workspaces. It lets you bundle a group of apps and their exact window coordinates into a custom desktop layout saved as a desktop shortcut.

Launch and snap in one click

Workspaces fully supports multi-monitor setups, meaning you can set up distinct layouts for different tasks, whether that is coding, data analysis, or writing.

Hit the shortcut, and Windows automatically opens your tools and snaps them right where you left them. The feature is scheduled to roll out soon with the PowerToys 0.84 update, following other recent PowerToys additions like an OpenAI-powered advanced paste tool.

Why it matters

For power users juggling complex workflows across multiple displays, this is an instant quality-of-life win. Windows has offered snap layouts for a while, but it never solved the chore of actually launching and placing those apps from scratch.

We think folding this capability into the official PowerToys suite is a smart move that fills a persistent gap left by standard Windows window management. The only real question will be how smoothly it handles sluggish legacy software and heavy IDEs when firing everything up at once.
