Microsoft poaches Meta infra veteran to build next-gen AI supercomputers
Microsoft just hired former Meta VP of infrastructure Jason Taylor as corporate VP and deputy CTO to build its next wave of AI supercomputing systems. Taylor previously spent over a decade managing Meta's AI data infrastructure and hardware budgets. Why it matters: As frontier models demand massive compute, Microsoft is securing veteran talent to scale its foundational data center architecture.

Microsoft just tapped former Meta infrastructure boss Jason Taylor to bolster its AI supercomputing efforts.
According to a LinkedIn post from Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott on Monday, Taylor is stepping in as corporate vice president and deputy CTO to help build the next generation of systems driving frontier AI forward.
A veteran of massive data center scale
Taylor spent over a decade at Meta from 2009 to 2022, eventually serving as vice president of infrastructure. During his tenure, he oversaw Meta's AI, data, and privacy infrastructure while managing the company's server budgets. He also chaired the Open Compute Project Foundation between 2015 and 2017, an initiative focused on open-source hardware designs for data centers.
Taylor's arrival comes as Microsoft continues an aggressive talent acquisition run. In March, the tech giant brought in Google DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman to lead its consumer AI arm, covering Copilot, Bing, and Edge. Meanwhile, rumors swirled last month about a potential $100 billion supercomputer project dubbed "Stargate" with OpenAI, though Scott pushed back on Monday, calling much of the recent speculation "amusingly wrong."
Why it matters
Building top-tier AI models is no longer just a research problem; it is a brutally expensive infrastructure challenge.
Taylor brings deep operational experience in managing hyperscale data center budgets and bespoke server architectures. We think this hire signals that Microsoft is zeroing in on hardware efficiency and cluster stability as its compute needs balloon. While researchers grab the headlines, the engineers keeping thousands of interconnected accelerators running smoothly on a manageable budget will ultimately decide how far frontier models can go.
