Microsoft reveals $30 Copilot pricing

Published Reach 42

Microsoft just announced that Microsoft 365 Copilot will cost $30 per user, per month for commercial customers. Alongside the pricing, the company launched Bing Chat Enterprise in preview with commercial data protection that guarantees chat data won't leak or train AI models, and rolled out visual search to Bing Chat. Why it matters: At $30 a month on top of existing plans, Microsoft is betting that generative AI can command premium enterprise software prices.

Employees have spent months pasting sensitive work into AI tools behind IT's back, while managers panicked about company data feeding public models.

At Microsoft Inspire, Redmond stepped in with a two-part answer: Bing Chat Enterprise for safe browsing, and the long-awaited price tag for Microsoft 365 Copilot.

Commercial access to Microsoft 365 Copilot will cost $30 per user per month for customers on E3, E5, Business Standard, and Business Premium plans when broadly available.

Enterprise privacy with zero trace

According to Microsoft's own Work Trend Index, 70% of workers want to offload as much work to AI as possible. The bottleneck has never been worker interest; it has been corporate paranoia over leaks.

Bing Chat Enterprise rolls out in preview to tackle that exact problem. It adds commercial data protection on top of web chat, promising that business queries will not leak outside the tenant.

Microsoft says chat logs are not saved, employees cannot view the sessions, and entered prompts will not be used to train AI models. In short, your company data stays locked inside the fence.

Around 160 million people already qualify for Bing Chat Enterprise at no extra charge through existing Microsoft 365 business subscriptions. Later on, standalone subscriptions will sell for $5 per user per month. Consumer Bing Chat also gained multimodal Visual Search powered by OpenAI's GPT-4, letting users search with uploaded photos, an ability heading to enterprise chat down the road.

Doubling the software bill

Bing Chat Enterprise handles basic web queries securely, but Microsoft 365 Copilot is where the real revenue engine sits.

At $30 a month per user, the add-on can easily double the monthly subscription cost of a standard corporate seat. Microsoft believes the deep integration with Microsoft Graph justifies the sticker shock.

Instead of just scraping web text, Copilot sits directly across an employee's inbox, calendar entries, internal chats, and cloud documents. It can draft email replies, catch you up on meetings you skipped in Teams, build pitch decks in PowerPoint, and crunch spreadsheets inside Excel.

Microsoft already tested this with 600 global enterprises, including KPMG, Lumen, and Emirates NBD, through an early access program back in May.

Why it matters

We think Microsoft's $30 monthly pricing sets a bold new baseline for enterprise generative AI. Rather than treating AI as an incremental feature update, Microsoft is pricing it like an indispensable executive assistant.

For businesses, the math is straightforward but unforgiving. Saving an hour of senior staff time each month easily covers the cost, but blindly deploying it across thousands of routine seats could balloon software budgets overnight. Most IT teams will likely pilot small departmental batches before writing company-wide checks.

For the broader industry, this move puts immediate pressure on Google Workspace and individual SaaS vendors. Microsoft is effectively boxing rivals out: giving away enterprise-grade web chat for free to stop data leaks, while locking customers into high-margin Office workflows that competitors cannot easily replicate.
