Microsoft brings GPT-5.5 Instant to Copilot

Published Reach 43

Microsoft just added OpenAI's GPT-5.5 Instant to Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Studio. The new model cuts down on verbosity, delivers faster and clearer answers for daily workflows, and sharpens image analysis and STEM tasks, with priority access for licensed users.

Microsoft is finally addressing one of the biggest annoyances of workplace AI: getting a wall of text and three unnecessary follow-up questions when you just needed a quick fact.

Microsoft rolled out OpenAI's GPT-5.5 Instant across Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Studio. The update is built specifically to make Copilot snappier, more accurate, and much less chatty during everyday work.

Smarter, faster, and straight to the point

Building on the previous GPT-5.3 Instant, the new model takes aim at everyday productivity bottlenecks.

Microsoft says GPT-5.5 Instant delivers noticeable improvements in image analysis and STEM-related tasks, making it much better at digesting uploaded charts and handling technical questions.

Crucially, it is tuned to cut out verbosity and stop pestering users with unprompted follow-up questions. The goal is simple: give workers an answer they can drop directly into a presentation or email without three rounds of conversational back-and-forth.

All of this runs within Microsoft's existing enterprise security, compliance, and privacy guardrails.

Where to find it and rollout tiers

Rollouts have kicked off today across multiple Microsoft surfaces, split by user access tiers.

Inside Copilot Chat, the model is available under the GPT dropdown selector as GPT-5.5 Quick response.

Licensed Microsoft 365 Copilot customers get priority access to the model, while users without a paid enterprise license receive standard access.

For agent builders, the model is heading to Copilot Studio in early release cycle environments under the name GPT-5.5 Chat. Developers building custom solutions can also access it through Microsoft Foundry.

Why it matters

We think this rollout highlights a crucial pivot in workplace AI: raw reasoning power matters less than low latency and conciseness when you are in the flow of work.

For office workers, waiting on a slow model that wraps every calculation in polite corporate padding is an active productivity killer. Sharpening image handling and STEM skills while cutting the chatter makes Copilot substantially more practical for quick daily workflows. If you have a paid license, toggling to the Quick response option is an easy win right now.

For the broader industry, Microsoft continues to show how quickly it can pipeline OpenAI's newest small and fast checkpoints directly into commercial enterprise seats. That keeps immense pressure on rivals like Google Gemini in Workspace to match both latency and output ergonomics.

That said, Microsoft is still walking a tightrope. Fast chat models are great, but the ultimate test remains whether Copilot can deeply reason across internal company context, rather than just being a faster version of the same web sidebar.
