Meta tests an AI search bar in Instagram

Published Reach 35

Meta is now testing its Meta AI assistant directly inside Instagram's search bar. Queries can kick off a private DM conversation for questions or surface specific Reels using pre-loaded prompts, mimicking Perplexity's clean interface. It looks like Meta's latest push to fix Instagram's notoriously clunky search and better take on TikTok.

Meta is tired of Instagram users complaining about its terrible search bar, so it's bringing in the bots.

According to TechCrunch, Meta is officially testing its generative AI assistant directly inside Instagram’s search interface. The move aims to do two things at once: give users a quick way to chat with Meta AI and overhaul how people discover content across the platform.

A chatbot in the search bar, with familiar styling

When you tap into the experimental search bar, you are prompted to start a direct message thread with Meta AI. From there, you can ask open-ended questions or tap pre-loaded prompt chips to get things moving.

That design quickly caught heat from Perplexity AI CEO Aravind Srinivas, who pointed out on X that Instagram’s prompt layout looks suspiciously identical to Perplexity’s own search UI.

Cosmetic controversies aside, the core utility is content discovery. A video surfaced on Threads showing users tapping prompts like "Beautiful Maui sunset Reels" to fetch relevant videos. Other testers confirmed they could ask Meta AI to surface tailored Reels recommendations.

Meta confirmed the experiment to TechCrunch, though it stopped short of clarifying whether the actual search backend is powered by a generative AI model. A company spokesperson noted that its generative AI experiences are in varying stages of development and currently being tested in limited public capacities.

Fighting TikTok for the search crown

Instagram’s internal search has historically been a running joke among power users, usually failing to surface relevant media unless you knew the exact handle or hashtag.

Meanwhile, TikTok has increasingly eaten Instagram's lunch as Gen Z’s primary search engine. Outside pressure is mounting too: Google launched its Perspectives filter last year to highlight results from TikTok and Reddit, leaving Instagram somewhat sidelined in external discovery.

Meta is clearly trying to open up. Reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi recently spotted an unreleased Instagram toggle called "Visibility off Instagram," suggesting the platform is actively preparing to let external web search engines index public posts.

Why it matters

If you use Instagram for anything beyond following your friends, this could finally make finding tutorials, travel spots, and creative inspiration genuinely usable. Asking an AI for specific video vibes beats guessing fragmented hashtags every single time.

We think putting Meta AI in front of Instagram's billion-plus users is a very calculated distribution play. Independent chatbot apps struggle with daily retention, but embedding the bot directly into a search bar people already touch dozens of times a day guarantees massive exposure.

It also seems Meta is realizing that AI's best consumer role right now isn't writing poetry, but acting as a navigational layer over massive content archives.

The catch is execution. Shunting users from a standard search bar straight into a DM conversation feels clunky and disruptive, looking more like an internal push to boost Meta AI user metrics than a native search upgrade. If the results end up pushing sponsored Reels rather than genuinely helpful content, users will see right through the AI wrapper.
