Meta drops Code Llama 70B with a 100k context window

Published Reach 62

Meta just rolled out Code Llama 70B, a larger coding model trained on 500 billion tokens with a massive 100,000-token context window. It arrives in base, Python-specialized, and instruction-tuned variants, all freely downloadable for commercial and research use under Meta’s permissive open license.

Code Llama 70B is an open-weights coding model from Meta designed to handle complex programming tasks directly on your own infrastructure. Building on the Code Llama lineup originally launched in August 2023, this 70-billion-parameter release is built to generate algorithms, write searches and sorting routines, and debug code from natural language prompts or raw snippets across languages like Python, C++, JavaScript, and Java.

Its headline feature is a 100,000-token context window. That large context allows you to feed in extensive documentation or multi-file project structures without running out of memory mid-session.

What it does and the available variants

Meta trained Code Llama 70B on 500 billion tokens of code and related data, using self-attention mechanisms to map code dependencies. The release comes in three distinct flavors.

The base CodeLlama-70B serves as the foundation for raw code generation and completion. For interactive development environments, CodeLlama-70B-Instruct has been fine-tuned to parse conversational instructions and plain-language requests.

For Python developers, Meta built CodeLlama-70B-Python. This version received an additional 100 billion tokens of Python-specific training data, which Meta claims delivers unmatched fluency and correctness when working in the language.

How to get it and license terms

All three variants are freely downloadable right now through Meta's download channels under the same open license applied to prior Code Llama releases. The permissive terms allow researchers and commercial enterprises alike to deploy, tweak, and fine-tune the weights without licensing fees.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg noted that coding has become one of the most critical use cases for modern AI, adding that coding skills help models process information more rigorously and logically in other domains as well.

Why it matters

For engineering teams constrained by data privacy and compliance rules, Code Llama 70B provides a credible open-source alternative to cloud-only subscriptions like GitHub Copilot or Google Duet AI and Gemini Pro. You can run it entirely on-premise without exposing proprietary codebases.

The tradeoff is hardware: hosting a 70B model with a 100k context window requires serious GPU compute. Solo developers writing lightweight scripts may still prefer managed cloud tools, but for enterprise teams looking to build customized, private coding assistants, this is currently one of the strongest open foundations available.
