Meta's new AI app is outpacing ChatGPT

Published Reach 38

Meta’s latest AI app, Muse, is racking up early mobile wins against ChatGPT, according to Apptopia estimates. In its first 12 days, Muse hit 1.8M iOS downloads in the U.S. and Canada compared to ChatGPT’s 1.3M at launch, alongside 642,000 U.S. daily active users. Why it matters: Meta's cross-promotion muscle is flexing again, with 95% of Muse users crossing over from Facebook.

Meta's new standalone AI app, Muse, is outpacing ChatGPT's early mobile launch numbers. According to estimates from market intelligence firm Apptopia, Muse pulled in 1.8 million iOS downloads in the U.S. and Canada over its first 12 days, handily beating the 1.3 million downloads ChatGPT recorded during its own first 12 days on the same platform and geography.

Active users show an even wider gap. Muse reached 359,000 daily active users on iOS in the U.S. over that stretch, compared to ChatGPT's 231,000 at the same point. Across both iOS and Android, Muse's U.S. daily active users hit 642,000, with global downloads climbing to 2.8 million.

The power of the Meta funnel

Comparing both debuts directly is tricky because of divergent launch playbooks. ChatGPT rolled out globally on day one, but was strictly iOS-only. Muse launched across both iOS and Android simultaneously, but was restricted solely to the U.S. and Canada.

Despite the tighter geographic fence, Muse climbed from No. 2 to No. 1 overall on the U.S. App Store, passing ChatGPT, as Business Insider reported. Analytics firm Appfigures also confirmed the app crossed 1 million installs shortly after debut.

Meta's secret sauce remains its unmatched cross-promotional engine. Apptopia found that more than 95% of Muse users are on Facebook, and 63% are on Instagram. By hooking Muse directly into Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, Meta is essentially rerunning the exact playbook that took Threads past 500 million users.

Meta has not yet shared official numbers for the app.

Why it matters

For everyday consumers, Muse is worth testing if your digital life already revolves around Meta platforms. Seamless handoffs between WhatsApp, Facebook, and your personal AI assistant reduce daily friction. But if you rely on frontier reasoning or coding horsepower, Muse does not suddenly replace dedicated desktop workflows.

For the broader AI ecosystem, this launch sends a sobering message to standalone AI labs. Raw model capability only gets you so far once a Big Tech incumbent switches on a multi-billion-user distribution pipeline. OpenAI created the category on mobile, but Meta is proving that proximity to everyday social habits can outmuscle pure brand cachet.

We think Meta played this brilliantly by treating Muse as a lifestyle product rather than an intimidating developer tool. However, the obvious caveat is retention. With 95% of users originating from Facebook, Muse is currently feasting on captive internal traffic. Converting passive scrollers into long-term, utility-driven AI users will be a much steeper hill to climb.
