Meta flexes Llama's explosive 10x growth
Meta just dropped new adoption stats for Llama, revealing total downloads on Hugging Face are approaching 350 million—a 10x jump compared to last year. Token volume across major cloud partners more than doubled between May and July 2024, with the massive 405B model driving the highest unique users in August. Open-source AI is no longer just for tinkerers; it's rapidly anchoring enterprise tech stacks.

Llama is Meta's flagship family of open-source large language models, spanning from lightweight local models to the massive 405B frontier variant. With Llama 3.1, it brings 128K context windows, support for eight new languages, and a complete reference system for building custom autonomous agents.
Meta released an update showing how fast the ecosystem is expanding. Total downloads across the Llama family on Hugging Face are rapidly approaching 350 million, marking a more than 10x surge compared to last year. Last month alone saw over 20 million downloads on the platform, alongside more than 60,000 community derivative models.
How it scales
Instead of just dumping model weights, Meta packaged Llama 3.1 with security tools and agent workflows that enterprise engineering teams can plug into existing pipelines.
While smaller checkpoints can run on local developer rigs, the massive 405B edition is built for enterprise infrastructure. Major cloud providers saw token volume for hosted Llama instances more than double between May and July 2024.
Across some of the largest cloud partners, monthly token consumption jumped 10x from January to July 2024. In August, one major cloud partner even reported that the 405B variant drew the highest number of unique users, proving that enterprise appetite for open frontier weights is real.
Hardware and platform partners are feeling the demand directly. Groq reported serving 5 billion free tokens daily to over 400,000 developers, while Databricks named Llama 3.1 its fastest-adopted and best-selling open model ever. Corporate adopters now span Goldman Sachs, DoorDash, Shopify, Spotify, and Zoom.
Where to get it
The weights and code are openly available to download on Hugging Face and Meta's official portal. For managed deployments, it is accessible via managed endpoints across AWS SageMaker, Azure, Databricks, and Google Cloud.
Why it matters
If you are an engineering team hesitant about relying on black-box commercial APIs, Llama 3.1 gives you frontier-grade performance without giving up data sovereignty. The gap between proprietary solutions and self-hosted models has effectively vanished on standard tasks.
Meta's aggressive open playbook is commoditizing the underlying intelligence layer, putting serious pricing pressure on proprietary labs. The catch remains deployment overhead: serving the 405B model yourself demands hefty cluster hardware, so most builders will still rely on cloud providers or smaller quantized models for everyday tasks.
