Meta, Hugging Face, and Scaleway team up to back open-source AI startups
Meta just partnered with Hugging Face and European cloud provider Scaleway to launch an AI startup program at STATION F in Paris. The initiative will mentor five early-stage startups building on open-source foundation models, giving them direct access to FAIR researchers, developer tools, and dedicated cloud compute.

If you are building an AI company today, your bottleneck usually boils down to three things: model access, talent, and eye-watering cloud compute bills.
Meta is trying to solve all three at once for a lucky few. The tech giant just teamed up with Hugging Face and European cloud provider Scaleway to launch the "AI Startup Program," an acceleration push designed to boost open-source artificial intelligence across the European startup scene.
Big compute meets FAIR research
Based out of STATION F in Paris—the world’s largest startup campus—and supported by the HEC incubator, the program is keeping things hyper-focused. It plans to select just five startups for an acceleration cycle running from January to June 2024.
To make the cut, companies must be building on open foundation models or demonstrate a clear plan to integrate them into their core products. The application window is tight, closing on December 1, 2023.
The real draw is the lineup of resources. The selected startups will get direct technical mentorship from researchers, engineers, and PhD students at FAIR, Meta’s Paris-based AI research lab. They also secure platform access and tooling from Hugging Face, alongside dedicated AI cloud computing power supplied by Scaleway.
Meta made sure to clarify that this is not just about LLMs. The startups can tap into vision models like DINOv2 and audio tools like AudioCraft. Meta Southern Europe VP Laurent Solly noted that the company has open-sourced over 1,000 models and tools to date, while Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue called open-source AI the defining tech movement of the decade.
Why it matters
For early-stage founders, this is essentially a cheat code for surviving the AI compute crunch. Finding the cash to train and fine-tune models while securing high-level research talent usually requires millions in seed funding. Getting Scaleway’s infrastructure, Hugging Face’s ecosystem, and direct access to FAIR researchers on day one dramatically lowers the barrier to shipping viable products.
Strategically, this is classic Meta. As OpenAI and Google push forward with closed proprietary systems, Meta's survival and dominance hinge on making open models the default standard for the next generation of builders. By partnering with the most influential hub in open-source AI (Hugging Face) and a major European cloud alternative (Scaleway), Meta is locking in European developer loyalty right at ground zero.
It is a win-win for everyone involved: Scaleway secures future enterprise cloud customers, Hugging Face deepens developer adoption, and Meta ensures its open-source weights remain the foundational bedrock of European tech.
