Meta CTO: smart glasses are the ultimate form factor for AI

Published Reach 36

Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth just laid out the company's roadmap for 2025, calling smart glasses the first hardware category completely defined by AI. The company is rolling out an early access preview of Live AI this month, shifting assistants from prompt-based replies to proactive helpers that follow your day.

Meta spent years taking heat for burning tens of billions of dollars on Reality Labs. But heading into 2025, the company sounds less like a defensive dreamer and more like an operator with actual momentum.

In a year-end memo published on December 16, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth declared that 2025 will be the most critical year in the history of Reality Labs. The rationale comes down to a core internal motto: code wins arguments. Meta learned more from shipping actual hardware this year than from years of theoretical debate.

Glasses as the true AI-native hardware

While Apple, Google, and PC makers are scrambling to retrofit existing devices around AI assistants, Meta argues that glasses are the first truly AI-native computing platform. A multimodal AI assistant makes the most sense when it shares your point of view and hears what you hear.

This month, Meta began rolling out early access to Live AI on its smart glasses. The feature shifts the assistant from a reactive bot waiting for a voice prompt into a proactive helper that observes and assists in real time throughout your day.

Then there is Orion, Meta's prototype AR glasses shown earlier this year. Bosworth compared the reaction to Steve Jobs seeing the Xerox Alto in 1979: once people see true AR working, there is no going back. While Orion is not a commercial product yet, Meta says building real units provided the intuition needed to accelerate future roadmaps.

The $299 wedge into living rooms

On the mixed reality front, the hardware playbook came together with the $299 Quest 3S. Meta noted strong sales over the Black Friday weekend, positioning the device as an accessible holiday gift. Because software updates rolled in continuously throughout 2024, the Quest 3S was actually better on day one than the $499 Quest 3 was at its 2023 launch.

The real surprise has been how people use these headsets. Meta discovered a surge of users popping on headsets while washing dishes or vacuuming, simply using passthrough to pin a floating video screen in space. It is a mundane use case, but one that drives actual daily retention.

Momentum on the software side followed. Batman: Arkham Shadow just grabbed Best AR/VR Game at The Game Awards, Horizon Worlds expanded to mobile to become a top three app on Quest 3S, and James Cameron recently partnered with Meta to help bring professional 3D storytelling to Quest headsets.

Why it matters

We think this update marks the moment Meta finally stopped selling an abstract virtual reality promise and started delivering tangible utility. By separating the vision into high-utility AI glasses for outside and cheap MR headsets for the couch, Meta found hardware form factors people actually use.

For everyday consumers, the barrier to entry has officially collapsed. A $299 headset that functions as a portable private theater is a compelling toy today, not an experimental dev kit. The smart glasses, meanwhile, offer the cleanest execution of ambient AI currently on the market.

For the broader industry, Meta is aggressively executing the Android playbook for spatial computing through Horizon OS. While Apple remains pinned at the luxury tier with the Vision Pro, Meta is flooding living rooms and building an entrenched base among younger gamers and casual viewers. The real test in 2025 will be whether proactive AI can deliver real daily utility without triggering massive privacy backlash.
