Messenger calls get AI backgrounds and HD video
Meta just announced major upgrades to Messenger Calling, rolling out AI-generated backgrounds powered by Meta AI alongside HD video and voice isolation. Users can also leave audio or video messages when friends miss a call, turning the chat app into a much more capable communication hub.

Meta is giving Messenger a massive communication overhaul, and it might just replace your regular phone app for good.
Meta rolled out a wave of requested updates to Messenger Calling, packing in Meta AI backgrounds, HD video, noise suppression, and voice-or-video voicemails.
People already spend more than 7 billion minutes on calls across Facebook and Messenger every day. Now, Meta wants to make sure those minutes sound and look crisp.
Clearer audio and customizable visuals
Building on the AI chat themes introduced in September, Messenger will soon let you generate custom backgrounds during live video calls via Meta AI. Tapping the effects icon on the call sidebar opens up "Backgrounds" to instantly cover messy rooms or add creative flair.
On the hardware side, HD video calls are now standard when connected to Wi-Fi. If you are on cellular data, you can toggle it on inside call settings.
Meta also brought in background noise suppression and voice isolation, aiming to strip out traffic and wind noise with a single setting switch.
Missed calls are getting an upgrade too. If someone fails to pick up, a "Record message" button lets you drop an audio or video memo right inside the thread. iPhone users can also summon Siri to make calls or dictate Messenger texts completely hands-free.
Why it matters
For everyday users, this removes the classic friction of taking a call in public. Noise isolation means you do not have to shout over street noise, and AI backgrounds eliminate the panic of cleaning your desk before picking up.
On an industry level, Meta is tightening its grip on personal communication. With 7 billion daily call minutes already on the books, adding HD calling and voicemail-style memos pushes Messenger directly into territory once dominated by standard cellular networks and FaceTime.
We think this is a smart, measured move for Meta. Instead of shoehorning a conversational chatbot where people just want to talk to friends, Meta used generative AI for an intuitive, utility-first task: video backdrops. The real retention win, however, lies in fixing audio and video clarity. The only catch will be monitoring battery drain and cellular data consumption once users start pushing HD video and AI rendering on the go.
