Leonardo.Ai grabs $31M to bring control to AI art
AI art platform Leonardo.Ai just raised $31M to scale its generative creative suite for enterprise and pro creators. With 7 million users generating over 700 million images, the platform stands out by prioritizing granular creative control, custom model training, and a real-time sketching canvas.

Sydney-based generative AI startup Leonardo.Ai just closed a $31M funding round led by Blackbird, with backing from Smash Capital, TIRTA Ventures, Side Stage Ventures, Gaorong Capital, and Samsung Next.
Founded last year, the company has grown at a blistering pace. It now counts over seven million users who have collectively generated more than 700 million images.
While platforms like Midjourney and Adobe Firefly focus heavily on raw generation quality, Leonardo.Ai is chasing a different prize: granular creative control.
Precision over slot machines
Co-founder and CEO J.J. Fiasson originally conceived the tool for game developers while running his previous gaming studio, Raini Studios. But the team quickly realized that ad agencies, fashion brands, and architects were wrestling with the exact same headache: AI art looks great, but keeping visual style consistent across multiple assets is an absolute nightmare.
Leonardo.Ai tackles this by letting creators train custom models on their own assets, ensuring characters, environments, and textures remain coherent across an entire project.
Under the hood, the platform builds on open-source foundations, trained with synthetic data and Creative Commons imagery. One of its standout tools, Live Canvas, pairs text prompts with a dynamic sketchpad. As you draw crude lines in real time, the engine instantly renders photorealistic details that mirror your brushstrokes.
Fiasson sums up the philosophy simply: control means utility. Without it, you are just rolling dice on pretty pictures.
Chasing enterprise workflows
With fresh capital in hand, the company is pivoting hard into B2B.
Leonardo.Ai recently rolled out an enterprise suite that includes team collaboration workspaces, private cloud hosting options, and production-grade APIs. That lets studio pipelines embed image generation directly into existing character modeling or storyboard workflows.
The new funding will primarily fund an engineering ramp-up alongside fresh sales and marketing hires targeting corporate accounts.
Why it matters
For digital creators, concept artists, and game studios, Leonardo.Ai is worth testing right now because it treats generative AI as a workflow tool rather than a toy. The ability to lock down character styles and steer composition through real-time sketching removes hours of tedious prompt wrestling.
For the broader AI space, this round shows investors still believe specialized production interfaces can carve out defensible businesses alongside foundational model providers. Midjourney remains largely trapped in Discord, while Adobe is catering to legacy Creative Cloud users. Leonardo.Ai found white space right in the middle.
We think betting on utility and direct canvas control is smart, but running on open-source foundations carries real risks. As foundation models add native spatial controls and real-time generation out of the box, Leonardo.Ai will have to prove that its custom training and enterprise tooling are sticky enough to keep studios from simply building in-house.
