Leonardo AI just opened up its Live Canvas feature to all users, free and paid alike. The tool turns rough sketches into finished artwork in real time as you brush on the canvas. The team also teased that more creative features will roll out over the next week or two.

Waiting for an AI image generator to finish rendering has always felt like watching paint dry. Leonardo AI is trying to kill that wait entirely.

Leonardo.ai rolled out its new Live Canvas feature to all users, making it immediately available to both free and paid accounts.

Real-time brushstrokes meet AI

The tool brings real-time rendering straight onto the canvas. As soon as you sketch a rough outline or lay down color swatches, the model updates a polished illustration alongside your strokes with zero noticeable lag.

Community creator Javi Lopez claimed that real-time AI generation is set to upend existing design tools and creative workflows completely. Leonardo.ai added that more capabilities will roll out over the next week or two.

Why it matters

Dropping Live Canvas directly to free users instantly turns up the heat on competitors. It shifts generative image tools away from a slow prompt-and-wait slot machine toward a responsive digital companion for rapid ideation.

For artists and concept designers, being able to iterate on rough compositions in real time saves huge amounts of exploration time. The open question is whether instant generation can hold up when pushed into complex art styles, but we think removing the feedback delay entirely changes how creators feel about using AI on a blank page.
