Jensen Huang just made his debut on X, and his very first post wasn't about shiny GPUs or his signature leather jacket. Instead, the NVIDIA CEO used his new megaphone to defend open AI models.

Coexistence at the frontier

Huang shared a letter NVIDIA signed on why open-weight models matter for the future of technology. His thesis is simple: AI will transform every industry, power every business, and eventually be built by every country.

Pushing back against critics who label open models a hazard, Huang argued that open weights actually strengthen cybersecurity, accelerate innovation diffusion, and protect national sovereignty. His bottom line: the world needs both frontier closed models and frontier open models to coexist.

Why it matters

We think this is Jensen playing the long game, and doing it brilliantly.

While closed-source labs push for tight guardrails, open weights are NVIDIA's best friend. If a handful of tech giants dominate AI with closed APIs, NVIDIA's customer base narrows and its pricing power shrinks. But when open models thrive, every enterprise and sovereign government wants its own data center to fine-tune and run them—which means buying thousands of NVIDIA chips.

Huang is framing this as a principled stand for safety and sovereignty, but make no mistake: keeping AI open ensures the entire world remains NVIDIA's customer base.
