Isomorphic Labs is in talks to raise over $2 billion
Isomorphic Labs is in advanced talks to raise more than $2 billion in a new funding round led by Thrive Capital. The AI drug discovery startup, spun out of Alphabet's Google DeepMind, will also see Alphabet participate. The massive deal underscores that big-ticket investor appetite for AI pharmaceuticals remains sky-high.
Isomorphic Labs just locked down a massive $2.1 billion financing round to turn AI drug discovery into a reality.
The Google DeepMind spin-off announced the raise led by Thrive Capital, which previously led the company's first funding round last year. DeepMind parent Alphabet and GV participated again, joined by a global heavyweight roster of new backers including Abu Dhabi's MGX, Temasek, CapitalG, and the UK Sovereign AI Fund.
Supercharging the IsoDDE engine
The fresh cash injection will go directly toward scaling Isomorphic's proprietary AI drug design engine, known as IsoDDE. The company plans to use the capital to push its pipeline of therapeutic programs toward actual clinical trials.
It also plans to expand global hiring across AI, software engineering, computational drug design, and clinical development. According to Isomorphic Labs President Max Jaderberg, IsoDDE has already hit key milestones internally, pinpointing viable drug candidates at unprecedented speeds across multiple disease areas.
The firm isn't just relying on internal experiments either. It has already secured high-profile commercial partnerships with industry giants Novartis, Eli Lilly, and Johnson & Johnson to co-develop new therapeutics.
Why it matters
A $2.1 billion round in biotech is rare air, and it signals that the world's most aggressive capital believes AI-first drug design is transitioning from a science project into actual drug development.
Demis Hassabis and his team are trying to solve biology from first principles. If IsoDDE proves that computational models can reliably bypass years of expensive trial-and-error chemistry, it will fundamentally reset the economics of pharmaceutical R&D, putting immense pressure on legacy biopharma and traditional CROs to overhaul their pipelines.
Strategically, bringing in state-backed and sovereign investors like MGX, Temasek, and the UK Sovereign AI Fund alongside Alphabet gives Isomorphic immense financial staying power. Drug pipelines take years and burning through billions in compute and wet-lab work is practically a requirement.
That said, biology is notoriously unforgiving. While finding drug candidates faster on a computer is a huge milestone, AI cannot speed up human biology. Clinical trials still take years, and human efficacy and toxicity have historically broken many promising computational models. But right now, Isomorphic has the deepest pockets and the most validated pedigree to see if the bet pays off.
