Instagram is using AI to hunt down teens lying about their age

Published Reach 31

Instagram just expanded its AI test to the UK, Canada, and Australia to proactively find teens and place them into protective Teen Account settings. Even if users register with an adult birthday, AI will flag suspected minors under 18 and restrict contact and content, building on over 54 million accounts enrolled so far.

Lying about your birthday to sign up for social media is as old as the internet itself.

Now, Meta is deploying AI to put an end to that trick. On September 22, the company announced that it is expanding its AI-powered age detection system to the UK, Canada, and Australia, following an initial test in the United States earlier this year.

The premise is simple: even if your profile claims you were born in 1995, if Meta's AI suspects you are actually under 18, it will proactively toss your Instagram account straight into restrictive Teen Account settings.

Caught by the algorithm

Once flagged, teens are placed in an experience designed to limit unwanted contact and sensitive content. Meta has also rolled out protections that block these suspected teens from going Live, while permanently locking on the feature that automatically hides inappropriate images in direct messages.

For those under 16, escaping these restrictions is nearly impossible without parental or guardian approval. However, Meta noted that if the AI misidentifies an actual adult, users will have an option to appeal and change their settings back.

Alongside the AI rollout, Meta is sending notifications to parents in the UK, Canada, and Australia. The company partnered with experts like pediatric psychologist Dr. Ann-Louise Lockhart to give parents advice on how to talk to their kids about entering their real birthdays online.

Meta says the push is already showing significant scale. Over 54 million teens have been placed into Teen Accounts globally so far. Interestingly, Meta claims that 97% of active teens aged 13 to 15 have chosen to remain in these protective settings rather than trying to disable them.

Why it matters

For parents, this takes some of the policing off their shoulders. Instead of having to inspect phones and decode privacy menus, the platform is using automated guardrails to shield younger users from unsolicited DMs and inappropriate feeds.

Across the industry, Meta is setting a new standard for age verification. For years, social platforms hid behind simple honor-system checkboxes, claiming they couldn't verify whether a user was lying about their birth year. By actively deploying AI to sniff out teen behavior, Meta is putting serious pressure on competitors like TikTok and Snapchat to adopt similarly aggressive measures.

We think using behavioral AI is a clever move because it bypasses the massive privacy backlash that comes with demanding government IDs from every user. That said, the real test will be accuracy. Meta hasn't shared false-positive rates, and if innocent adults find their accounts throttled and livestreaming privileges revoked by an overzealous algorithm, Instagram could be facing a customer service headache.
