Inflection AI secures $1.3B from Microsoft and Nvidia
Inflection AI just raised a staggering $1.3 billion in a new funding round led by Microsoft, Bill Gates, and Nvidia, pushing its valuation to $4 billion. The startup is partnering with CoreWeave and Nvidia to build an unprecedented 22,000 H100 GPU cluster to train models for its personal assistant, Pi.

The AI boom has entered the supercomputing phase, and the checks are getting astronomical.
Inflection AI just announced a massive $1.3 billion funding round led by Microsoft, Reid Hoffman, Bill Gates, Eric Schmidt, and new investor NVIDIA. According to TechCrunch, the deal vaults the one-year-old startup to a $4 billion valuation, bringing its total raised capital to $1.525 billion.
A $1.3B war chest and 22,000 GPUs
Founded in 2022 by DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman, former DeepMind researcher Karén Simonyan, and LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman, Inflection is chasing a different dream. Instead of another cold search assistant, it wants to build an emotionally supportive companion.
Its flagship chatbot Pi, short for personal intelligence, launched in May. Pi acts as a friendly confidante and coach, and it is currently free to use on the web, mobile, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger.
Powering this vision takes serious compute. Inflection revealed that it is partnering with GPU cloud provider CoreWeave and NVIDIA to construct a cluster housing 22,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs.
The company claims this cluster delivers 22 exaFLOPS of 16-bit performance. If submitted to the latest TOP500 supercomputer list, it would rank near the second spot globally, tailored specifically for generative AI models.
The AI funding split: Runway flies, Stability wobbles
Inflection was not the only AI darling raking in cash today. AI video generator Runway announced a $141 million extension to its Series C round, backed by Google, NVIDIA, and Salesforce Ventures.
Runway, now valued at $1.5 billion according to Bloomberg, recently debuted Gen-2, an AI model capable of generating high-fidelity video clips directly from simple text prompts.
Yet the generative AI gold rush is showing clear cracks. Stability AI, which co-created Stable Diffusion, reportedly raised $25 million through a convertible note amid cash burn struggles, according to Bloomberg.
While Stability AI and its CEO Emad Mostaque denied having fundraising difficulties, reports indicate the company failed to close a deal at a desired $4 billion valuation, remaining anchored at its previous $1 billion mark.
Why it matters
For everyday users, Pi offers one of the most natural, supportive conversational experiences on the market today. It is free and easily accessible, making it well worth testing if you want a sounding board rather than a blunt search engine.
Across the industry, NVIDIA is playing a masterful game. By backing both Inflection and Runway, NVIDIA is reinvesting venture dollars directly back into its own H100 order books, making its hardware the indispensable currency of frontier tech.
Meanwhile, Microsoft is smartly hedging its bets. Even with billions sunk into OpenAI, Redmond is ensuring it holds a front-row seat at the next potential breakout studio.
In our view, Inflection's move is a high-stakes gamble. Assembling the world's second-largest compute cluster is an impressive flex, but consumer companion bots have a historically terrible monetization track record. Without a clear path to enterprise revenue, those 22,000 GPUs will burn through cash at an eye-watering speed.
