IKEA launches an AI home decorator in the GPT Store

Published Reach 34

IKEA just launched an official AI assistant exclusively in OpenAI's GPT Store to help users design their living spaces. You can tell it your room dimensions, style, and budget, and it will browse the catalog to suggest matching furniture and check local stock. It is currently limited to ChatGPT Plus subscribers in the U.S., with plans to expand globally.

Trying to furnish a tiny apartment can feel like solving a 3D puzzle with missing pieces. You find a sofa you love, but you are never quite sure if it will fit through the door, match your rug, or actually be in stock at your local warehouse.

Now, IKEA wants ChatGPT to handle that headache for you. Ingka Group, the largest IKEA retailer, just launched an official AI assistant inside OpenAI's GPT Store.

An interior designer in your chat box

The new IKEA AI assistant acts as a personalized design and shopping tool. Instead of scrolling through endless product pages, users can describe their living space in plain language.

You can prompt it with specific constraints, like asking for a cozy living room layout for a small apartment using sustainable materials under a tight budget. The assistant then responds with customized furniture recommendations based on room dimensions, personal style, and functional needs.

It pulls directly from IKEA's catalog of thousands of products and allows shoppers to check real-time product availability across different store locations. It also dishes out styling tips and real-life home transformation stories from IKEA's global community.

Currently, the tool is available exclusively to ChatGPT Plus subscribers in the US. However, IKEA says it plans to expand the assistant to more markets where ChatGPT operates later this year.

Behind the scenes, Ingka Group is also pushing an internal AI literacy initiative, aiming to train more than 3,000 employees throughout 2024 to support its practical, responsible AI rollout.

Why it matters

For consumers, home planning is notoriously high friction. Professional interior design is expensive, while DIY planning often leads to mismatched furniture and sizing regrets. Putting IKEA's entire catalog into a conversational interface dramatically lowers the barrier to getting functional layout ideas, complete with local stock checks.

That said, the friction has not vanished entirely. Requiring a paid ChatGPT Plus subscription is a real barrier for casual shoppers. Moreover, you are locked exclusively into the IKEA ecosystem, which won't help anyone looking to mix and match with existing furniture from other brands.

For the retail industry, this is one of the clearest examples yet of conversational commerce taking root inside frontier AI platforms. Instead of waiting for shoppers to visit their website or mobile app, IKEA is meeting them directly inside the generative AI workflow.

We think launching on the GPT Store was a clever, low-risk move to test conversational shopping without building complex bespoke infrastructure from scratch. The long-term risk, however, is platform dependency: relying on OpenAI's ecosystem means IKEA does not own the front-end user experience or the direct traffic channel.
