Hugging Face drops HuggingChat as an open-source ChatGPT rival

Published Reach 49

Hugging Face just rolled out HuggingChat, an open-source alternative to ChatGPT. The web app is powered by Open Assistant’s latest model and Hugging Face’s Inference API. It is a major push to ensure the open-source community keeps pace with proprietary commercial chatbots.

HuggingChat is Hugging Face’s new open-source alternative to ChatGPT, bringing community-built models straight into a clean web interface.

What it is and how to run it

Under the hood, the app runs on Open Assistant’s latest model, which the team calls the top open-source chat model available right now.

It handles queries via Hugging Face’s own Inference API, meaning you do not need beefy GPUs or complex local setups to chat with it.

Anyone can jump in and try it out right in the browser at hf.co/chat.

Why it matters

We think HuggingChat’s biggest win is dropping the barrier to open-source AI down to zero.

Instead of wrestling with local weights, drivers, or command-line scripts, everyday users can now test where community models stand against proprietary chatbots with a single click.

If you want a chat assistant outside closed commercial ecosystems, it is well worth a test run today.
