Groq just signed a non-exclusive licensing deal with Nvidia to scale its low-latency AI inference technology worldwide. Groq founder Jonathan Ross and president Sunny Madra are joining Nvidia to lead the integration, while Groq will remain an independent company led by new CEO Simon Edwards, keeping GroqCloud running uninterrupted.

Nvidia just pulled off another massive AI acqui-hire in everything but name, and this time the target is inference darling Groq.

Groq announced that it has entered into a non-exclusive licensing agreement with Nvidia for its inference technology. The two companies framed the deal as a way to expand access to high-performance, low-cost AI inference at scale.

The founders head to Nvidia

The real headline sits in the personnel move. Groq founder Jonathan Ross and president Sunny Madra, along with other key members of the team, are moving directly to Nvidia to help advance and scale the licensed tech.

Groq itself will continue operating as an independent company. Simon Edwards is stepping in as the new CEO, and the company stated that its GroqCloud developer service will keep running without interruption.

Why it matters

We have seen this playbook before: big tech licenses a promising startup tech stack while bringing in the core talent, bypassing the traditional regulatory headache of a full buyout.

For Nvidia, this looks like a very smart move to secure its dominance. While Nvidia owns training, Groq made waves with blazing inference speeds. Absorbing Groq architecture and its leadership team helps Nvidia defend against hyper-specialized inference chips.

For developers using GroqCloud, the lights stay on for now. But with the original founders leaving to build inside Nvidia, Groq long-term hardware roadmap as an independent player suddenly faces serious uncertainty.
