Technical reasoning from first principles

Elon Musk announced that an early beta of Grok 3.5 will roll out next week, available exclusively to SuperGrok subscribers.

According to Musk, Grok 3.5 is the first AI capable of accurately answering complex technical questions about topics like rocket engines and electrochemistry. He claimed the model reasons directly from first principles, generating answers that simply do not exist on the public internet.

Musk paired the teaser with Grok 3 usage stats originally reported by TechCrunch. During its launch week, Grok's mobile downloads surged 10x, with daily U.S. active users jumping 260%. Daily visits to Grok's web app shot from 189,000 to over 900,000, reaching 4.5 million hits globally, partially fueled by expansions into Europe, Latin America, and Southeast Asia.

Why it matters

If Grok 3.5 can truly synthesize valid technical solutions beyond existing training data, it could become a serious research tool for hardware and chemical engineers. But right now, it is locked behind the SuperGrok tier, and everyday users have little reason to upgrade solely for niche aerospace problems.

We think xAI is smart to ride the momentum of Grok 3's download spike to push users toward its premium subscription. Framing the model around rocketry highlights Musk's unique engineering brand against rivals like OpenAI. However, claiming to produce answers not found on the internet sets a dangerous bar: separating true scientific deduction from high-confidence hallucinations will be xAI's real test.
