Google brings real-time voice chats to Search

Published Reach 39

Google just launched Search Live in its mobile app, letting users have free-flowing voice conversations with Search powered by a custom Gemini model. It streams spoken answers, shows web links on-screen, and keeps running in the background. It basically turns search into an active audio call, though it's currently limited to U.S. Labs users.

Packing for a trip with both hands full, and need to know how to stop a linen dress from wrinkling? You no longer have to drop everything, wipe your hands, and type into a search bar.

Google just rolled out Search Live with voice input inside the Google app on Android and iOS. Right now, it is available to U.S. users enrolled in the AI Mode experiment within Google Labs. You will spot a new Live icon right beneath the search bar.

Tap it, and you can jump into a natural, back-and-forth voice conversation with Search, while browsing related web links on the fly.

Multitasking without missing a beat

Voice assistants often suffer from a frustrating flaw: the moment you switch screens, the flow breaks. Google designed Search Live to handle actual everyday multitasking.

It works in the background, so you can keep chatting out loud while checking a calendar or replying to a text in another app. You can ask follow-up questions seamlessly, hear real-time AI audio responses, and still see helpful source links pop up on your screen.

If you prefer reading, tapping the transcript button pulls up the text response and lets you switch back to typing. Every session is saved in your AI Mode history, meaning you can resume old queries whenever you want.

Powered by Gemini, with eyes on the camera

Behind the curtain is a custom version of the Gemini model built specifically for advanced voice interactions. Google says it leverages their core search infrastructure, using a query fan-out technique to gather and surface a wider, more diverse pool of web sources.

There is more coming down the pipe. In the coming months, Google plans to introduce camera integration to AI Mode, allowing Search to see what you are looking at while you talk back and forth.

Why it matters

We think this is Google playing to its biggest home-turf advantage: the open web.

While OpenAI has set a high bar with Advanced Voice Mode for pure conversational fluency, Google is anchoring voice in verifiable information. It is not just talking at you; it is routing you to actual web links and letting you multitask in the background. For anyone cooking, packing, or commuting, turning search into an ambient earbud companion is genuinely useful right now.

It also sets the stage for what comes next. Pairing conversational voice with real-time camera input is the holy grail of multimodal assistance. Google is clearly preparing to turn the mobile search bar into a full-fledged, real-time agent that can look at your surroundings and guide you through real-world problems.
