Google Search adds hover pop-ups for AI link groups
Google just rolled out a desktop update for AI Overviews and AI Mode that displays clustered source links in a pop-up when you hover over text. It also introduced more descriptive and prominent link icons across desktop and mobile, aiming to get people to source content faster without cluttering search results.

Hover for the receipts
Google is tweaking how its AI answers show where they actually get their information.
According to Google’s Robby Stein, desktop search results are getting a new hover pop-up feature across AI Overviews and AI Mode. When you hover your cursor over specific sections of an AI-generated answer, a pop-up menu appears showing a cluster of source link cards with more prominent site details.
Alongside the desktop hover feature, Google is also rolling out larger, more descriptive link icons inside responses across both desktop and mobile. Google says early tests showed the updated UI is more engaging and makes it easier for users to click through to external websites.
The catch? Search Engine Land points out that site owners still have no way to track these AI hover clicks in Google Search Console.
Why it matters
For everyday searchers, it cuts down on the friction of fact-checking an AI response. You can quickly preview where a claim came from without opening five new tabs or losing your place on the results page.
For the broader web, it looks like Google trying to calm publisher anxieties. AI summaries have faced heavy criticism for keeping readers trapped on the search engine results page, so giving links prominent hover real estate is a clear gesture toward sending traffic back out.
Still, we think this peace offering feels incomplete until Google gives creators the metrics to prove it. Making links shinier is great, but site owners need actual Search Console data to know if anyone is truly clicking through.
