Google gives merchants free AI product photoshoots
Google just rolled out Product Studio to U.S. merchants and advertisers, letting businesses generate custom product imagery, swap backgrounds, and enhance low-res shots for free using text prompts. It is built to save sellers from costly reshoots ahead of seasonal campaigns. The tool is currently available via Merchant Center Next and Shopify.

If you run an e-commerce brand, you know the drill: every new season means another painful and expensive photoshoot. A summer product shot with tropical leaves does not work when winter comes around, and building physical sets eats up cash fast.
Google wants to fix that. Right after Amazon announced its own generative AI ad tools last week, Google is rolling out Product Studio to U.S. merchants and advertisers.
Free scene swaps and instant touch-ups
First teased back in May, Product Studio is now available to all Merchant Center Next users in the U.S., as well as through the Google and YouTube app on Shopify.
The tool lets sellers generate brand-new product imagery simply by typing text prompts. You take an existing product photo and describe the vibe you want.
Google gave the example of a skincare bottle. In the summer, you could prompt it to sit surrounded by peaches and tropical plants. For the holidays, you just type sitting on snow surrounded by pinecones.
Beyond setting scenes, the AI can also remove messy backgrounds, turn backgrounds into solid colors, and upscale low-resolution product photos so you do not have to reshoot older inventory.
Giving small shops more search spotlight
Alongside the imagery tool, Google is adding a few merchant-focused updates across Search and Maps.
There is a new small business attribute that highlights smaller brands on Search and Maps listings. Google will assign it automatically based on catalog size and web traffic, but merchants can also toggle it on or off inside their profile.
Google is also revamping the merchant knowledge panel on Search. Instead of just displaying headquarters locations and employee counts, it will now surface live promotions, shipping and return policies, customer service links, and ratings.
According to Google, these panels drove over 2.3 billion connections per month to U.S. businesses in 2022, spanning phone calls, direction requests, and bookings. Bringing pricing and perks into that view should shorten the checkout journey.
Why it matters
For merchants running lean teams on Shopify, this is an instant win. It will not eliminate the need for an initial clean studio shot, but it dramatically lowers the cost of remixing assets across seasonal campaigns and seasonal sales.
For the ad industry, the battleground between Google and Amazon has shifted. It is no longer just about bidding algorithms; it is about who can automate creative production so sellers can run more ads with zero friction.
We think integrating this directly inside Merchant Center and Shopify is a smart distribution move. The potential trap, however, is visual sameness. If thousands of stores generate the exact same AI winter scenes, consumer fatigue will set in fast, and poorly matched lighting could easily drive up return rates.
