Google brings Imagen 3 to the Gemini API

Published Reach 41

Google just opened up its flagship Imagen 3 image generation model to developers via the Gemini API. Priced at $0.03 per image, it delivers high-fidelity visuals across styles while embedding SynthID watermarks. Paid API users get access first, with a free-tier rollout coming soon.

If you have been waiting to plug Google’s top-tier image generator straight into your apps, the wait is over. Google just made Imagen 3 officially available through the Gemini API.

Paid developers can start generating images right away, while users on the free tier should get access soon.

Three cents per image and tighter prompt control

Under the hood, developers are calling the imagen-3.0-generate-002 model endpoint. Pricing is set at $0.03 per image.

The API gives you standard developer controls, including aspect ratio adjustments and the ability to generate multiple variations in a single call.

Quality-wise, Imagen 3 is designed to cut down on artifacts while handling diverse visual styles. It can bounce between photorealism, impressionist landscapes, anime characters, and abstract art.

Prompt adherence is where it really shines. It follows long, descriptive instructions far better than previous versions, cutting down on the need for excessive prompt engineering.

Integration is also dead simple. Using the updated google-genai Python SDK, pulling a generated image into your workflow takes fewer than ten lines of code.

On the trust and safety front, every image generated by the API automatically carries Google’s invisible SynthID digital watermark to identify it as AI-created content.

Why it matters

This is a massive convenience upgrade for developers building multimodal applications. Instead of juggling one provider for text logic and another for visuals, you can now orchestrate both inside the same Gemini API ecosystem.

At three cents per image, Google is pricing Imagen 3 aggressively enough to compete directly with DALL-E 3 and other cloud-hosted image models.

We think this unified approach is smart. It removes friction for teams that want to build autonomous workflows where Gemini writes the copy and immediately calls Imagen to design the assets.

The real test will be latency and edge-case rendering consistency once traffic ramps up. But right now, if you are already using Gemini for language tasks, bringing visual generation under the same umbrella is an absolute no-brainer.
