Google Docs lets you listen to your docs with Gemini
Google just added an audio listening feature to Google Docs powered by Gemini, letting users hear their documents read aloud with natural-sounding voices and adjustable speeds. You can find "Listen to this tab" under Tools > Audio, though rollout is currently limited to Workspace business, enterprise, and Gemini add-on tiers.

Proofreading with your ears
Proofreading your own writing is notoriously tricky because your brain tends to smooth over missing words and clunky phrasing. On August 18, Google rolled out a new audio feature in Google Docs powered by Gemini that reads your documents aloud.
You can access it under Tools > Audio by selecting "Listen to this tab." Google lets you choose from several clear, natural-sounding voices and adjust playback speeds to match your preference.
The feature is rolling out to Google Workspace Business and Enterprise tiers, Gemini Education and Business add-on accounts, as well as Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. Free personal accounts do not have access.
Why it matters
Listening to a draft is often the fastest way to catch awkward flow and typos that your eyes skimmed past. It also turns long briefing memos into hands-free audio for commutes or when your eyes need a break from the screen.
We think embedding text-to-speech directly into the Docs workflow makes practical sense. Instead of pushing flashy generative tools, it targets a mundane, daily friction point for anyone working with words.
However, keeping it locked behind paid business and AI subscriptions limits its immediate impact. For casual users, paying an enterprise premium just to hear a document read aloud is a tough sell when free browser extensions still get the job done.
