Google brings conversational Gemini to Apple CarPlay

Published Reach 44

Google just added its Gemini AI assistant to Apple CarPlay within Google Maps, letting US drivers handle complex, multi-step queries like finding pit stops and rerouting around toll roads using natural voice chat. Drivers simply tap the on-screen Gemini icon to trigger it. It still lacks the personalized Gmail and Calendar integrations recently given to Android Auto, but it brings long-overdue conversational smarts to iPhone drivers.

Asking your car infotainment system for food recommendations without ending up on a toll road usually takes multiple frustrating voice prompts.

Google is rolling out its Gemini AI assistant to Apple CarPlay, starting today for drivers in the US with a global rollout underway. The feature adds a dedicated Gemini button directly inside the Google Maps interface on car dashboards.

Multi-step navigation lands on the dashboard

The move comes nearly a year after Gemini first landed on Android Auto.

Drivers can now handle multi-step requests naturally without taking their hands off the wheel. You can ask for nearby stops, pick one, and tell it to navigate there while avoiding tolls in a single continuous conversation. It also allows voice reporting for traffic incidents.

However, CarPlay users are missing out on the Personal Intelligence features Google rolled out to Android Auto. That means this version cannot tap into your private data across Gmail, Calendar, Photos, or Search.

Why it matters

For drivers who prefer Google Maps over Apple Maps on CarPlay, getting conversational AI on the road makes multi-stop navigation substantially less distracting. If you are in the US, it is an easy upgrade worth trying immediately.

We think bringing Gemini to CarPlay is a smart land-grab on Apple's home turf. Even without the deep personal workspace integration found on Android Auto, conversational maps highlight just how far ahead Google's voice intelligence feels compared to basic Siri navigation prompts.
