Google leaked to rebrand Bard as Gemini
Google is reportedly preparing to rebrand its Bard chatbot as Gemini, according to a leaked changelog. The update reveals a paid "Advanced" tier powered by Gemini Ultra with enhanced multimodal and coding capabilities, alongside a dedicated mobile app. Why it matters: Google is unifying its AI brand to take on ChatGPT Plus directly.

Google has been running an identity crisis with its AI. The chatbot was called Bard, but the brain inside was Gemini. Now, it looks like Google is finally cleaning up the mess.
According to a leaked changelog spotted by developer @evowizz, Google is reportedly planning to rebrand Bard to Gemini as soon as February 8. The new home is already live at gemini.google.com.
Meet Gemini Advanced and a dedicated mobile app
The rebrand is just the surface. The real story is that Google is finally ready to monetize its most powerful AI model.
According to the leak, Google will introduce "Gemini Advanced," a paid tier powered by Gemini Ultra. Much like OpenAI's GPT-4 subscription, this tier promises enhanced multimodal capabilities, significantly better coding assistance, and deep analysis of complex files and documents.
Mobile users are also getting a massive upgrade. Google is preparing a dedicated Gemini app for Android, letting users tap into AI directly on their phones for planning, writing, and research.
The mobile experience will integrate natively with Google services like Gmail, Google Maps, and YouTube. Meanwhile, iOS users are expected to access Gemini through the existing Google app.
There are geographic shifts too. Canada will officially gain access for the first time, and language support will cover English, Japanese, and Korean across most parts of the world.
However, Europe seems to be left in the dark for now, and the leak notes that the mobile app may initially be restricted to select devices.
Why it matters
Dropping the Bard name is the smartest move Google could make right now. Bard always felt like a rushed, defensive reaction to ChatGPT, while Gemini represents Google's actual modern AI infrastructure. Unifying the brand cuts through the confusion.
More importantly, Gemini Advanced turns the AI battle into a direct subscription war. If Gemini Ultra can deliver on its benchmark promises while seamlessly plugging into Gmail, Drive, and Maps, OpenAI will finally face a serious consumer challenger to ChatGPT Plus.
But Google still has familiar obstacles.
Leaving Europe out of the launch highlights how ongoing regulatory friction continues to slow Google's rollout in key markets. Restricting the Android app to specific devices at launch could also frustrate users who expect Google's ecosystem perks on day one.
