Google will now auto-label political ads made with AI

Published Reach 36

Google just made it easier for political campaigns to disclose AI-generated content. Instead of requiring advertisers to insert their own notices, Google will now automatically slap an in-ad disclosure on YouTube Shorts, feeds, and in-stream video whenever an advertiser checks the "altered or synthetic" box. Other ad formats will still require manual disclaimers.

With the U.S. presidential election just months away, AI-generated political ads are under a massive microscope. Now, Google wants to make flagging them a little more foolproof.

As spotted by Search Engine Land, Google is rolling out a feature that automatically generates in-ad disclosures whenever an election advertiser flags their creative as containing altered or synthetic content.

Google first required political campaigns to insert clear and conspicuous AI disclosures last year. This new update takes the manual editing off their plates: checking a single box in campaign settings will automatically apply the disclaimer across mobile feeds, YouTube Shorts, and in-stream ads on phones, computers, and TVs. Advertisers will still have to handle their own disclaimers for other formats.

The push comes as Washington circles the issue. In May, the Senate Rules Committee advanced a bill mandating AI disclosures in political ads, while the FCC proposed similar rules.

Why it matters

We think this is a smart operational upgrade that fixes an obvious loophole. Leaving disclosures up to campaign staff meant warnings were often tiny, brief, or tucked away where voters barely noticed them. Automating the UI creates a consistent visual cue that viewers on YouTube Shorts or smart TVs can actually spot.

The catch, of course, is that the whole system still runs on the honor system. A checkbox only works if a campaign decides to check it. Google is smartly getting ahead of federal mandates, but policing campaigns that intentionally keep the box unticked remains an unsolved problem.
