Google's Art Selfie returns with a generative AI makeover

Published Reach 33

Google just launched Art Selfie 2, upgrading its classic museum feature with generative AI. Instead of just finding existing portrait lookalikes, the tool blends your selfie into over 25 historical and artistic styles—from Monet's garden to medieval armor—while serving up bite-sized cultural history lessons as it generates.

Back in 2018, Google had a viral hit on its hands with Art Selfie, a feature that scanned museum archives to find your historical oil painting doppelgänger.

Now, Google Arts & Culture is bringing it back with a modern twist. The team just launched Art Selfie 2, swapping pure facial matching for generative AI.

Step inside the canvas

The original tool simply matched your face to existing cataloged portraits. Art Selfie 2, which started as a prototype in Google’s Artists in Residence program, actually generates new imagery around your likeness.

You can snap a photo solo or grab a group of friends, pick an aesthetic, and watch the model composite your face into historical and cultural scenes.

At launch, Google offers more than 25 visual styles, with promises of more down the line. You can turn yourself into an explorer climbing Mount Everest, a muse lounging in Monet’s garden, or a medieval knight in full armor.

Instead of just giving you a profile picture, Google baked in some micro-learning. While the AI generates your portrait, the app displays historical trivia relevant to the setting.

Once it finishes, a read more prompt surfaces curated stories, archival artifacts, and partner museum collections tied to that specific movement or era.

Alongside the launch, Google expanded availability for Art Remix to more regions. That feature shows you a famous artwork alongside its text prompt, challenging you to tweak the words and generate an altered masterpiece.

Why it matters

Museum and cultural apps usually fight an uphill battle for daily attention. They get downloaded for a class assignment or a vacation trip, then sit unused in an app drawer for years.

Art Selfie 2 proves that fun and social sharing remain the best Trojan horse for educational tools. For everyday users, there is zero prompt fatigue here. You do not need to understand complex image generator parameters; you just take a selfie and end up with an instantly shareable image.

We think this is a smart, low-friction showcase of generative AI that sidesteps enterprise hype. While the rest of Big Tech argues over code generation benchmarks and office suites, Google is deploying consumer AI where it feels playful and harmless.

The real challenge will be longevity. Packaged prompt templates can feel stale after twenty minutes of tapping. Unless Google regularly updates these scenarios or ties them directly into physical museum visits, it risks being a viral weekend distraction rather than a lasting educational habit.
