Google sets up $120M fund to bridge the global AI divide

Published Reach 36

Google CEO Sundar Pichai just announced a $120M Global AI Opportunity Fund at the UN Summit of the Future. The company plans to partner with local nonprofits to bring AI education and training to communities worldwide, aiming to stop an AI divide before it widens.

Speaking Saturday at the UN Summit of the Future, Google CEO Sundar Pichai called AI "the most transformative technology yet" and put some real cash behind the statement: a new $120 million Global AI Opportunity Fund.

The goal is simple: avoid a world where advanced AI only benefits wealthy nations.

Teaming up with NGOs to teach AI

Google plans to distribute the $120 million through partnerships with local nonprofits and NGOs, bringing AI education and training programs to communities around the globe.

Pichai highlighted four big areas where AI can drive sustainable development: helping people access information in their native languages, accelerating scientific breakthroughs, tracking and alerting on climate disasters, and fueling economic growth.

He did admit AI comes with risks, explicitly calling out deepfakes. But he noticeably skipped any mention of AI's massive carbon and energy footprint on the environment.

Pichai also used the global stage to push back against strict government rules, urging policymakers to adopt smart regulations that avoid protectionist impulses that could widen the AI divide.

Why it matters

For local communities and underserved populations, getting hands-on AI training through trusted local organizations could provide a real leg up in adapting to new tech.

We think this is classic big-tech diplomacy. Writing a $120 million check at the United Nations buys Google immense goodwill, builds a pipeline of global users, and provides a polished platform to lobby against protectionist foreign regulations that threaten its global reach.

That said, the omission was glaring. Praising AI for tracking climate disasters while completely ignoring the booming energy consumption of AI data centers feels like a convenient blind spot Pichai was not ready to address.
