Google AI Studio adds conversation branching

Published Reach 47

Google just added conversation branching to Google AI Studio for Gemini models, letting developers branch off prompt experiments without messing up the main thread. It makes multi-turn prompt debugging and alternative ideation far easier. You will need to toggle on Drive Access and Auto Save in settings first.

Tinkering with prompts often comes down to a frustrating choice: do you derail a working conversation to test an idea, or waste time copying context into a brand new window?

Google AI Studio just fixed that annoyance. Logan Kilpatrick announced on X that the platform now supports conversation branching for Gemini models.

Forking your prompts without losing context

With this update, developers can branch off from any specific message in a session to pursue a tangent without disrupting the original discussion.

You can explore alternative responses freely and jump right back to the parent thread whenever needed. To use it, you just need to enable Drive Access and Auto Save in your AI Studio settings.

Why it matters

Prompt iteration often feels like writing code without version control. We think bringing native branching into AI Studio solves a very real, everyday headache for builders.

Instead of managing multiple duplicate tabs or accidentally wiping out a solid prompt flow, you can test side experiments cleanly. It is a straightforward addition, but it makes AI Studio feel much more like a serious developer workbench.
