Google injects Gemini AI into Chromebook Plus
Google just rolled out a suite of AI features for its Chromebook Plus lineup, including system-wide writing help, AI-generated wallpapers, and the Magic Editor in Google Photos. Even better: buying a new device gets you a full year of the Google One AI Premium plan for free, unlocking Gemini Advanced.

Google is bringing its flagship AI models directly to your desktop toolbar, and it is using aggressive hardware bundles to do it.
The search giant rolled out a suite of Gemini-powered AI tools for its Chromebook Plus lineup, while partnering with HP, Acer, and Asus to launch six new laptops starting at just $299.
Gemini takes over ChromeOS
Chromebook Plus laptops, which require slightly higher minimum hardware specs, get the lion's share of the upgrades. Google placed a dedicated Gemini icon right on the app shelf for immediate chat access.
Beyond the chatbot, Google integrated systemwide writing assistance. You can now highlight text in PDFs, websites, or web apps to rewrite, change tone, or adjust length on the fly. The update also brings generative AI wallpapers, custom video call backgrounds, and the Google Photos Magic Editor, letting users move or resize objects while AI fills in the background.
To seal the deal, Google is bundling 12 months of the Google One AI Premium plan with every new Chromebook Plus purchase. That gives buyers access to Gemini Advanced, 2TB of cloud storage, and AI features inside Docs, Sheets, and Gmail.
Standard, budget-friendly Chromebooks are also getting quality-of-life updates. Setup now only requires scanning a QR code with an Android phone to transfer Wi-Fi and account details. ChromeOS also added Google Tasks into the calendar view, native GIF screen recordings, and a mobile game keyboard mapping tool.
Google teased upcoming features as well, including Project Gameface head-tracking controls, Gemini-powered web and document summaries, cross-device task continuity, and a focus mode tied to YouTube Music playlists.
Why it matters
While Microsoft is betting on expensive Copilot+ PCs with heavy on-device NPUs, Google is taking the cloud route to undercut them on price. By packing high-end AI software into laptops ranging from $299 to $699, Google makes generative AI accessible to students and budget-conscious workers without requiring high-end silicon.
The 12-month AI plan bundle is a smart customer acquisition play. It essentially offsets the purchase cost of the machine with premium cloud services. However, the catch is obvious: almost all of these flagship AI features rely on cloud connectivity rather than local execution, and users will eventually face a subscription cliff once the free year runs out.
