Google just supercharged Gemini 2.5 Pro's coding skills

Published Reach 62

Google just dropped an updated Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview ahead of I/O, packing big upgrades for coding and UI development. It took the #1 spot on the WebDev Arena leaderboard, handles complex backend refactors with ease, and can turn YouTube videos into interactive web apps. The update rolls out automatically to existing API endpoints at the same price.

Google couldn’t even wait two weeks for its own developer conference.

Google just pushed out an early update to its flagship model, dubbing it the Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O edition). The headline here is simple: a massive upgrade to coding chops, specifically targeting front-end UI polish, complex code refactoring, and agentic workflows.

The update is live right now in Google AI Studio and Vertex AI at the same price, quietly pointing the existing 03-25 checkpoint to the new 05-06 build without requiring any migration.

Leading the leaderboard with better visual taste

Most AI code generators can spit out functional React components, but making them look like a human designer touched them is another story.

With this update, Gemini 2.5 Pro jumped to the number one spot on the WebDev Arena leaderboard, gaining 147 Elo points over the previous release. The benchmark specifically tracks human preference for visually pleasing, fully interactive web applications.

Google showcased a dictation app built with the model, highlighting details like custom audio waveform animations, responsive CSS, and subtle button hover states designed entirely by the model. Paired with an 84.8% score on the VideoMME video understanding benchmark, the model can also digest a single YouTube video and automatically turn it into an interactive learning web app.

For casual builders, the model is also baked into the Gemini web app to power Canvas, enabling prompt-based web generation in real time.

Winning over the developer toolchain

Front-end flair is nice, but heavy lifting is where models earn their keep.

The updated model is already powering Cursor's code agent, and early feedback from AI coding companies is surprisingly bullish. Silas Alberti from the Cognition team noted that the new model became the first to solve an internal evaluation involving a large backend refactor of a request router, praising its senior-level judgment on software abstractions.

Meanwhile, Replit President Michele Catasta called it the top frontier model for its capability-over-latency ratio, revealing plans to roll it out to latency-sensitive Replit Agent workflows. Google also tuned the plumbing, cutting down function-calling errors and improving trigger reliability.

Why it matters

Google is making an aggressive play for Claude’s lunch.

For months, Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet has been the default engine inside developer tooling like Cursor and Devin. By securing public endorsements from both Cognition and Replit on the exact same day, Google is proving that Gemini 2.5 Pro is no longer just a benchmark champion, but a serious drop-in alternative for production code agents.

For everyday developers, it is absolutely worth testing today in AI Studio. The biggest unlock is reducing the tedious cycle of tweaking CSS variables and layout alignments by hand. If a model understands design nuance out of the box, building prototypes becomes significantly faster.

That said, high Elo scores on web mockups do not automatically translate to bulletproof software engineering. Passing a junior-dev refactoring test in a sandbox is impressive, but legacy codebases are messy and unforgiving. Google has the latency and multimodal context advantages on lock, but whether developers trust it over Anthropic for mission-critical logic will depend on how cleanly it handles real-world bugs.
